Technical Approach

LoVEUS will follow the client-server principle, incorporating a server with numerous clients, introducing the following features:

  • Location and orientation calculations, correct positioning of the client in the overall network area.

  •  A user management component.

  • Anonymous, profile based personalisation of the information prior to transmission.

  • Enhanced storage and GIS (Geographic Information System) associating GIS data to multimedia objects.

  •  Information Streaming of the multimedia content.

  • Authoring tools for the insertion of content enhancements.

  • Enhancements to the mobile terminal for efficient and transparent provisioning to the user of services.

LoVEUS targets the following technical activities towards its realization:

  • Design and implementation of a Geographic Information System (GIS) incorporating multimedia information.

  • Design and implementation of a communication system for pulling location and orientation information from the user’s terminal device.

  • Design and implementation of a Location Server that will receive co-ordinates and orientation of the terminal device and forward it to the other LoVEUS components.

  • Design and implementation of a video server that will handle compression and streaming issues for the delivery of the multimedia content to the users.

  • Enhancements to the mobile terminal for efficient and transparent provisioning to the user of services e.g. communication (active and passive) and location based information control modules, supervisor module etc.

  • Design and implementation of optimised, lightweight software modules for controlling the incoming content through an intelligent GUI and the user’s movements as recorded by the GPS and compass devices.

  • Design and implementation of a filtering component that will discern content that is of no interest to the user prior to its transmission to the client.

  • Design and implementation of authoring tools that will help produce and populate the enhanced content.

  • Real world trials deploying the developed technology in the actual context with the involvement of real actors.
